The National Rifle Association of America (NRA) is a U.S. nonprofit organization that advocates for gun rights.

Founded in 1871, the group to advance rifle marksmanship, the modern NRA continues to teach firearm safety and competency. The organization also publishes several magazines and sponsors competitive marksmanship events, also inform its members about firearm-related legislation since 1934, and it has directly lobbied for and against firearms legislation since 1975.

According to the NRA, it has nearly 5 million members as of December 2018, although that figure has not been independently confirmed.

The NRA sponsors a range of programs about firearm safety for children and adults, including a program for school-age children, the NRA’s “Eddie Eagle”. The organization issues credentials and trains firearm instructors.

Notable members

Nine US presidents have been NRA members. In addition to Grant, they are: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush (who resigned in 1995), and Donald Trump. Three US vice presidents, two chief justices of the US Supreme Court, and several US congressmen, as well as legislators and officials of state governments,  are members.

When it comes to hunting and skills training, America’s 13.7 million hunters have known for years to go the NRA for training. Working in cooperation with the state of New York in 1949, NRA developed hunter safety training as it’s known today. Since then, as our proven hunting education principles have been adopted by one state and province after another, we’ve expanded our services and assistance to hunters.
